David Preil has been conducting at Theater Hof since the 2022/2023 season.


Artist biography

After his engagement at the Theatre Hof in the Season 2022/2023 initially as Head of Music and Vocal Coaching with conducting obligation, he was additionally appointed as Kapellmeister at the start of his second Season. This Season he will conduct "Die Zauberflöte" by W.A. Mozart, "Wie einst im Mai" by Walter and Willi Kollo and "Sweeney Todd" by Stephen Sondheim as well as other upcoming productions. He will work with the Nordwestdeutschen Philharmonie again and is looking forward to his concert debut with the Hofer Symphonikern.

In Sommer 2023 David Preil was accepted by the German Music Council for their Concert Sponsoring Programme, he has been supported by their “Forum Dirigieren” since 2021. This support has the distinction of providing Master Classes and concerts with first class conductors and orchestras such as The Musikalischen Komödie Leipzig, The Folkwang Chamber Orchestra and The Badische Staatsphilharmonie Karlsruhe. This also provided the opportunity of learning from well known figures such as Johannes Klumpp, Georg Fritzsch and Tobias Engeli.

In his first Season at the Theatre Hof (2022/2023) he directed the production of "Weisse Rose" by Udo Zimmermann and Mozart’s "Bastien and Bastienne". He also conducted performances of the operetta "Die Fledermaus" by Johann Strauß and the musical "Brigadoon" by Frederick Loewe.

From 2020 to 2022 he was engaged at the Sächsischen Staatsoper Dresden as music and vocal coach for the "Junges Ensemble". During this time, he assisted many renowned Conductors such as Marie Jacquot, Omer Meir Wellber and Alessandro de Marchi. During his work at the Semperoper he built up a considerable repertoire on the piano. David Preil was involved in numerous new productions and revivals. Among these are many repertoire pieces such as "Don Giovanni", "Die Zauberflöte", "Cosi fan tutte", "Le nozze di Figaro", "La Bohème", Tosca", "Carmen", "La Cenerentola" and "The Bartered Bride". He has also assisted in the area of New Music and Musicals for many pieces, for example "Der goldene Drache", "Schneewitte", "Drei miese, fiese Kerle", "Into the Woods" and "Die Kahle Sängerin".

David Preil completed his studies at the Hochschule für Musik "Franz Liszt" in Weimar, his principal subject being Orchestral Conducting, under Prof. Nicolas Pasquet, Prof. Gunter Kahlert and Prof. Ekhart Wycik. During his studies he was awarded a Scholarship from the Erasmus Foundation and took a semester abroad at the Conservatorio "Giuseppe Verdi" in Milan under Vittorio Parisi. Additional artistic impetus came from Master Classes with Ole Kristian Ruud, Clark Rundell and Jorma Panula.

At concerts, assistances and Master Courses he has also worked at the Opera Leipzig, the Coburg Regional Theatre and the Festival "Oper im Steinbruch" in St. Margarethen. The Staatskapelle Weimar, the Jenaer Philharmonie, the Orchestra of the Musikalischen Komödie Leipzig and the Badische Staatsphilharmonie Karlsruhe are some of the orchestras with which he has collaborated.
